All survivors, creatures and most objects will have inventories. At the top you’ll see different sorting options for; Alphabetical Order, Weight, Type, and Unit as well as the option to search and create custom folders. At the bottom of the inventory you’ll see your Quick Item Slots, you can place items in here to make them quickly accessible using shortcuts on your controller. Your inventory also displays what your current equipped items are, as well as where you can craft new items. Some items will require creating an advanced-crafting station, such as the Smithy to make.

As you level up, you will gain one stat point which you can use to improve your character’s survival ability. With the stat points you can improve your survivors; Health, Stamina, Oxygen, Food, Water, Weight, Melee Damage, Movement Speed, Fortitude and Crafting Speed. Your stats will also display how well protected you are against the weather, tips as to your current location, the amount of defense you’re receiving from your armour and your in game level.

As you spend your stats, you unlock Engram Points. These points are spent on unlocking the knowledge to craft new items from a primitive tier, to the advanced tek tier. Each survivor has a limited amount that they can learn, and some Engrams may have prerequisites before they can be unlocked, or require the need of an advanced crafting station to create.

Both your spent stat points and engram points remain fixed unless you create a Mindwipe Tonic which will function as a reset to both your stats and engrams, returning you the points to you unspent.

Before you’re able to craft an item, you’ll need to harvest the necessary materials needed to make it. You can harvest the items by interacting with objects on the island. Starting off you’ll want to pick up stones, punching trees, picking berries from bushes. As you progress through the game, new tools will become available to you to assist with harvesting, allowing the process to become more efficient and more refined. You’ll also be able to make use of your tamed creatures to help harvest.

As you reach higher levels and unlock new engrams, you’ll find that some of the new items do not appear in your crafting area of your inventory. This is because they may need to be crafted at an advanced crafting station. Some of these crafting stations may require extra materials to use, such as Fuel for the Fabricator. These stations will have their own inventories as well as their own engrams letting you know what you can craft, assuming you have the knowledge.

Due to the dangers of the ARK and how progression works, it is very important that you build shelter to stay protected. You can start off crafting the most basic pieces in your own inventory, under the crafting section highlighted earlier. Upon crafting a piece, you’ll want to pick a good spot to place it. Consider your location, how readily available are you to water, are there concerns in regards to the creatures that live nearby? Any points of interest you’ll want to avoid or be closer to? If you think you’ve found a good spot - you can begin the process of building. Sometimes, it’s better to build right away and move later on when you’ve advanced further.

After you’ve placed your first foundation piece, you’ll be able to snap other structural items to it and then your base will begin to grow. As you progress through the game you’ll unlock new tiers of crafting and you’ll be able to upgrade your base even further with all the latest defenses.

Forceful Taming is the process of rendering a creature unconscious and feeding them appropriately to raise their taming affinity. Once they have reached maximum taming affinity, they’ll wake up and will have successfully tamed. The key in this process is to ensure that the creature remains unconscious throughout the period, you can control this by keeping it’s torpor level high. To knock a creature unconscious, it’ll need to gain a significant amount of torpor from combat. The most common tools survivors use to knock a creature unconscious are; Slingshots, Tranquilizer Arrows, Tranquilizer Darts, Clubs and their Fists. To keep a creature knocked out, you’ll want to feed it Nacroberries or Narcotics, applying damage will also work but this will affect the taming effectiveness. Taming Effectiveness is how powerful the creature will be when tamed, the higher the effectiveness, the more bonuses it will receive. Creatures lose effectiveness from taking longer to tame and based on the damage they’ve taken prior to being tamed.

Unlike Forceful Taming, Passive Taming is accomplished with no combat whatsoever. The key is to approach the creature and feed it until it’s Taming Affinity has maxed out. If the creature takes damage or becomes hostile during this period, you’ll lose affinity and may be forced to start again. To begin the process, simply place the feed in your final Quick Slot walk up to the creature from behind and hit the interaction key to feed it. Some creatures will constantly be moving, others will be approachable and some may be aggressive if they come into direct face-to-face contact with you.
