The Tetris® game is a deceptively simple game that is easy to learn but difficult to master. Shapes called Tetriminos drop one at a time into a 10x20 grid called the Matrix. You can move and rotate these Tetriminos in order to complete solid lines.

Use Left and Right on the D-pad or / to move the Tetriminos left and right.

can be used to rotate them clockwise.is used to rotate counterclockwise.

If you’d like the Tetriminos to drop faster, you can press Down on the D-pad or This is called a soft drop.

If you’d like them to drop instantly to the bottom of the Matrix, you can press Up on the D-pad or This is called a hard drop.

When each square in a single row is full, it will disappear. This is called a Line Clear. Clearing lines is important, because when your Matrix is so full of Tetriminos that you are unable to drop another one, that is Game Over.

If you encounter a Tetrimino you don’t want to use right now, press the or on your wireless controller to save it into your Hold queue. When you want to use the Tetrimino, press or again to swap it with your current Tetrimino.

Look around your Matrix for important information about your game. On the right side of your Matrix is your Next queue, which shows you which Tetrimino will fall next. On the left side of your Matrix is your Hold queue, which shows you what Tetrimino you have saved. On the bottom, you will see your current level, score, and other relevant information to your current mode.

Tetris™ Line Clears:
You can earn more points by clearing more than one line at a time. The maximum amount of lines that can be cleared at once in standard Tetris® variants is 4 lines, using the I-shaped Tetrimino. This is called a Tetris™ Line Clear.

You can achieve a Tetris Line Clear by stacking your Tetriminos 4 rows high leaving only one vertical gap. When you get an I-Tetrimino, place it into the gap for a big score reward.

T-Spin:
Did you know that you can spin Tetriminos for a few moments after they have landed? By rotating the T-Tetrimino you can fill tricky gaps and clear lines. This is called a T-spin and it can earn you big points.

You can practice your T-spins on low levels in Marathon mode. You’ll need to set up T-shaped gaps in your stack and then spin the T-Tetrimino the correct direction into them. If you can manage to clear one, two, or three lines with a T-spin, you can earn huge bonuses.

Combos:
You can also earn points by clearing lines with each successive Tetrimino. The best way to do this is to make a very tall stack in your Matrix with a 2 square gap on one side. You can then drop nearly any Tetrimino in the gap and clear lines with each one. For a high combo, this can be hugely rewarding.
Here are some tips to increase your overall score!

Level:
The higher your level, the more points you will earn for each action. If you can handle the speed, try increasing your starting level for a higher score!

Multiple Line Clears and Special Moves:
Getting a double line clear is worth more than twice the points of 2 singles. Advanced moves like Tetris™ Line Clears and T-spins are worth even more. It’s worth the time to set up big clears. Also don’t forget that chaining Tetris Line Clears (with no line clears besides T-Spins in between) will earn big Back-to-Back bonuses and making many line clears in a row will get a big Combo bonus.

Marathon:
Marathon is the traditional Tetris® mode. You will level up every 10 lines, and the game will be over when you top out or reach level 15.

In Marathon mode it is a good idea to do big-scoring moves like T-Spins and combos in the early levels, before the speed gets too intense.

You can also increase your score by increasing your starting level. However, the game will always end at Level 15 and 150 lines. For example, if you set your starting level to level 8, you will clear 80 lines at Level 8 speed, and your level will increase every 10 lines after that.

Endless:
Endless is similar to Marathon mode, but it will only end when you top out. You can increase your starting level up to Level 15, but you must clear the number of lines equal to 10x your starting level before you level up again.

Endless will only be unlocked after you have successfully completed Marathon mode.

Sprint:
Sprint, also known as 40 lines, is another popular Tetris® variant. The object of the game is to clear 40 lines in as little time as possible.

For the best results in Sprint, it is a good strategy to go for Tetris™ Line Clears. Use the hard drop and try not to waste time rotating the Tetriminos unnecessarily.

Ultra:
Ultra is a Tetris mode that lasts for 3 minutes. The game does not level up and you can not change your starting level, so can clearly compare your score with others’.

The challenge in Ultra is to score the maximum amount of points in a fixed amount of time. Make use of Combos, Back-to-Back Tetris Line Clears and T-Spins to rack up a big score.
Battle is an intense head-to-head Tetris® variant where players do point-scoring moves in order to send incoming lines to the bottom of the other player’s Matrix. The winner is the last player left standing.

Moves that send lines are Tetris™ Line Clears, T-Spin Line Clears, doubles, triples, combos, and perfect clears. You can also send extra lines by doing Tetris Line Clears and T-spins back-to-back.

When your opponent sends you lines, you’ll see them indicated in the battle bar on your Matrix. The higher the red indicator, the more incoming lines you can expect when you set down your next Tetrimino.
However, if you perform a line-sending action with that Tetrimino, those lines will get subtracted from the pending lines in your battle bar. For example, if you have 4 pending lines in your battle bar and you perform an action that sends 2 lines, you will only get 2 incoming lines.

If you and your opponent have different skill levels, the more skilled player can increase their handicap to make the match more interesting. Increasing the handicap will add lines into the Matrix at the beginning of the game, giving the other player a head start.
Battle Ultimate is the same as Battle but adds Powerups for greater excitement.

To trigger a Powerup, watch for special Tetriminos that have Powerup indicators on them. Clear a line containing any part of that Tetrimino, and the Powerup will trigger in yours or your opponent’s Matrix. But watch out, because the Tetrimino’s power will expire after a few turns.

Here is a description of the Powerups that are available in Tetris® Ultimate.

Buzzsaw - Removes 3 random lines from your own Matrix and sends extra lines to your opponent.
Carousel - Temporarily causes your opponent's blocks to move to the left one square every time they land a Tetrimino.
Hip to Be Square - Changes your opponent’s next 4 pieces into squares.
Haunted Well - Makes your opponent’s blocks invisible for 3 turns.
Let it Rain - Rains Minos down on the top of your opponent’s Matrix.
In Co-op and Team Versus Games, you play in a wider Matrix with two blocks of overlapping space called the 'shared well'. Both you and the player next to you can place blocks within the shared well. In order to clear lines, you must cooperate to make a solid line across the entire Matrix. You will also be sharing a next queue and hold queue with your teammates.

For these modes, communication is key! Work with your partner to pass key Tetriminos through the hold queue and set up your line clears.

Co-op games are available from 2-4 players, and your objective is to work together to achieve the goals of that mode. In Team Versus games, you and your partner are competing against another team of two.
You can play any game with up to three other players or AI using Party Play. The top of the Party Widget is your Party and the bottom contains cards representing local players, your friends, and pre-loaded AI called 'Tetribots'. Select the card of any friend or Tetribot and press to move them into your party. If you want to remove them, just select their card and press again. A local player can add themselves by pressing . You must have your party configured before you select a mode. For example, if you have friends in your party and you attempt to select a Solo mode, you must empty your party before you can begin the game.
Belts:
There are 8 Belts in Tetris® Ultimate that correspond to your highest Level in Marathon or Endless. Your belt will always appear near your Gamertag during games.

Badges:
Look for the Badges page in the Progress tab to see all the badges you can earn. The badges are divided into sets of 3; earning all 3 will get you an Achievement.

My Tetris® Self:
Check out My Tetris® Self at the top right hand corner of the screen for a snapshot of all your accomplishments in the game and how they compare to your Friends'.

My Tetris Self also keeps track of how you play Tetris and creates a custom AI based on your play style. If you are offline, your friends can still add you into their party and play against your 'Tetris Self'.

Leaderboards:
You can compare your scores in each mode with your Friends and with the world in the Leaderboards. Use the filters on the left side of the screen to see different leaderboards.
You can invite a friend who is online to join your game. Your online friends will be sorted to the top of your friend list. You can send an invite by toggling to their name and pressing .When you select a mode and start the game, your friend will be waiting for you. If they don't accept your invite, you can play the game with their Tetris® Self AI.

When your friend sends you an invite, you will see a notification on your screen. If you accept, you’ll enter a waiting area. Once your friend selects a mode, the game will begin.
To enter Tetris® Live select the Tetris Live toggle in Party Play and press . After you select a mode, you will enter a waiting area to look for more players. Note that not all game types are available to play in every mode while in Tetris Live.

You may enter Tetris® Live with your Friends. To do so, add an online Friend into your party while in Tetris Live and select a mode. Tetris Live will find you two other players to fill out your party. However, you can not bring AI or your friend’s Tetris Self into Tetris Live.
