The map will rotate so that the direction the character is facing will always be at the top center of the mini-map. “N” on the mini-map represents north. Note that while the character is in a flying vehicle or parachuting an altimeter will display over the mini-map.

  • HEALTH BAR

Shows how much health the character has left. When the bar is empty, the character is "wasted" and you will be revived in the nearest hospital for a small fee.

  • ARMOR BAR

You can buy a range of armor weights at AmmuNation. If you are shot while wearing armor, the armor will be damaged before the character’s body starts to take damage. As the armor gets damaged the armor bar will decrease.

  • SPECIAL ABILITY BAR

Each character has a unique Special Ability which they can use if the Special Ability bar has been built up enough (see Special Abilities). Special Abilites are activated by pressing+.

  • INSTRUCTIONAL TEXT

  • Grand Theft Auto V features three playable protagonists - Michael, Franklin and Trevor – and many missions are tackled by two or three of them together, with the ability to switch between the characters mid-action as they work as a team to get the job done.

Off mission, Michael, Franklin and Trevor each go about separate lives with their own friends, hobbies and sidelines, giving the player the choice to experience and explore San Andreas from three very different perspectives and, for the voyeur in all of us, the freedom to switch between them in real-time at any point to see what they’ve been up to.

Your fourth character slot is reserved for your custom Grand Theft Auto Online player character.

  • Michael, Franklin and Trevor start with different Player Stats based on their backstory and skillset. Each of these Stats can be improved with experience which will in turn improve each character's individual abilities, reactions and endurance as they progress through the game. The more a character uses a skill, the more his related Stats will increase. For example, if Michael spends time flying a helicopter, his Flying Stat will increase.

Note: Player Stats are unique to each character – spending a lot of time behind the wheel as Franklin will increase Franklin’s Driving Stat, but won’t have any effect on either Michael or Trevor’s Driving Stats.

  • SPECIAL

Using a character’s Special Ability will gradually improve their Special Stat. As the stat bar increases, the speed at which that character’s Special Ability bar fills up will also increase.

  • STAMINA

Extra stamina will allow the character to sprint, swim and cycle for longer without getting tired. The stat will increase as the player performs each of those activities.

  • SHOOTING

A higher Shooting Stat will make the character more accurate by reducing recoil while shooting any gun. He will also be able to reload faster and carry more ammunition. The more targets the player hits, particularly with headshots, the more his Shooting Stat will increase. Spend time in the Shooting Range and take on shooting challenges as a fast way of improving this skill.

  • STRENGTH

Additional strength will inflict heavier damage during hand-to-hand combat, increase speed at climbing ladders, and decrease the amount of damage taken from falls, car crashes, explosions and fire. It will also improve the character’s tennis and golf by allowing them to hit the ball harder. Engaging in unarmed combat, and taking part in sports like tennis, golf and yoga will raise the character’s Strength.

  • STEALTH

The higher the Stealth Stat is, the quieter the character will be in both stealth and normal movement modes, and he’ll also be able to move more quickly in stealth mode. The Stealth Stat will increase the more time you spend moving in stealth or performing stealth takedowns. Pressto enter stealth mode.

  • FLYING

When the character has a low Flying Stat, the performance of any aircraft they are flying will be more susceptible to the effects of turbulence. As the stat increases, the character will able to both fly and land more smoothly. Increasing the Flying Stat will improve the character’s ability to fly all aircraft. Spending more time flying will improve the Flying Stat. Visit the Pilot School to help improve this stat.

  • DRIVING

Improving the Driving Stat will improve the character’s vehicle handling when airborne and make performing wheelies easier. The more time the character spends driving vehicles, the faster the Driving Stat will improve, particularly performing wheelies and landing big jumps on four wheels.

  • LUNG CAPACITY

Having a high Lung Capacity means the character can stay submerged under water for longer. Lung Capacity will increase as the character spends more time under water.

  • Michael, Franklin and Trevor each have their own unique Special Ability. To activate a Special Ability press+simultaneously. Beneath the mini-map there is a Special Ability bar showing how much Special Ability the character has left (see Heads Up Display in the Controls section). The Special Ability bar fills up when certain actions are taken, which vary from player to player.

  • MICHAEL

Michael is an expert marksman with lightning reactions in a gunfight. His Special Ability slows down time in a gunfight allowing him to pick off his targets with greater ease. Increase Michael’s Special Ability bar by driving at high speeds and performing lethal moves such as headshots and stealth takedowns.

  • FRANKLIN

Franklin is a skilled driver with sharp reflexes behind the wheel. His Special Ability slows down time while driving any road vehicle, allowing him to quickly navigate through traffic with ease and take corners at high speed. Time spent driving at speeds, narrowly avoiding collisions and driving against traffic will increase his Special Ability bar.

  • TREVOR

Trevor is a drug-addled sociopath with a short fuse. His Special Ability sends him into a rage, during which he causes double damage to enemies and takes half as much damage when hit. Killing targets, performing headshots, driving at high speeds and taking damage increase his Special Ability bar.

  • Imagine a city full of people ruthlessly pursuing wealth, fame and self-improvement, at any cost. Everyone you meet is either a celebrity, trying to be a celebrity, or used to be a celebrity. Nature’s bounty means you could enjoy perfect weather all year round. The air is so good you can literally see and taste it. Dare to dream, because that city exists…

Welcome to beautiful Los Santos in the great state of San Andreas, where heaven really is a place on earth. From skyscrapers to trailer parks, mansions to ghettos, oceans to deserts, golf clubs to strip clubs, Los Santos and the surrounding areas truly offer something for everyone. Transportation options abound: ride a bike, take a train, hail a cab or borrow a vehicle from an unsuspecting local. For the more adventurous visitor, pick up a dune buggy, speedboat or visit one of several airports for a chance to take to the skies. This is a place where you can do anything, and anything goes. Get a tattoo in Vinewood, get a hole in one in Richman, get a rocket launcher in Sandy Shores, get a diamond earring in Rockford Hills, get a mullet in Mirror Park. This is Los Santos… it’s all there for the taking. Go out and get it.

  • CLOTHING

With arguably more fashion victims per square mile than even Liberty City, Los Santos is packed full of clothes stores to suit all tastes. For the poser with more money than sense, stop by Ponsonbys for top designer brands at extortionate prices. For the label whore trying to cling to their lost youth, pick up some mass-produced, modern-vintage, smart-casual threads at Suburban, and then pretend to know what any of that means. For the shopper on a smaller budget – or the hipster who wants to dress like one – check out one of the many Bincos stores around town.

  • TATTOO

Show how unique you are by getting a tattoo just like everybody else, because nothing says individuality like a tribal band or Chinese symbol you don’t understand picked out of a catalogue at random.

  • HAIRCUT

San Andreans take their hair very seriously and, like everything else in Los Santos, half of it isn’t real. For a classic fade, rails, tramlines, siderows, shutters and more, visit the original Herr Kutz in South Los Santos or, if you willing to spend a little more (i.e. add a zero), Bob Mulet in Rockford Hills can craft you a prize coif in minutes.

  • WEAPONS

Time and time again in a financial crisis, guns and tobacco have proven themselves to be the only truly recession-proof industries in the United States. Manufacturer of weapons – and reasons to own weapons – Ammu-Nation has zealously defended the American people and the Constitution for over 50 years.

  • AUTOMOTIVE SHOPS

Everyone’s had work done in Los Santos, so don’t let your vehicle be the exception to the rule. Stop by one of the many Los Santos Customs locations around the city to upgrade your ride with customized wheels, paint jobs, body kits and much more.

  • CONVENIENCE STORES

If you’re flagging and need a quick energy boost, you can stock up on candy at many convenience stores, liquor stores and gas stations around the city. Mistakes happen, if you pull out your gun instead of your wallet you might just walk out of there richer than you went in.

  • PARACHUTING

If throwing yourself from stupid heights with nothing but a piece of material attached to your back with string for protection is your idea of fun, the greater Los Santos area has no shortage of spots to do it.

  • DARTS

You don’t have to be drunk and obese to play darts, but you can be, and that’s what makes it the sport of kings.

  • FLIGHT SCHOOL

To learn highly technical aerial maneuvers – or just how to land without killing yourself in a ball of fire – visit the Flight School at Los Santos International Airport.

  • GOLF

The Los Santos Golf Club is the one place wealthy men know they can get away from their wives, because they're not allowed to play. Women might have won the vote in 1920, but they’re still not allowed on the course in Richman.

  • SHOOTING RANGE

Is there a more proudly American way to let off steam that unloading a few rounds into a cardboard cutout of a faceless terrorist?

  • RACES

After all those hours wasted in Los Santos traffic, you need an outlet for your pent-up road rage. Join the other macho adrenaline junkies over-compensating for something at one of the many street, off-road and sea races around Los Santos and Blaine County.

  • TENNIS

Tennis is a great way to work off last night’s bad decisions and dwell on just how middleclass you’ve become.

  • TRIATHLONS

Tests of endurance for people with too much time on their hands that require a ton of expensive specialized equipment. Triathlons are so inclusive! Check www.egochaserenergybar.com on the in-game Internet for upcoming races.

  • YOGA

Placing your head flat in your crotch really unblocks your chakras and inspires ideas for creative ways to enjoy your alone time. Unwind at the end of a hard day by winding your spine into a knot.

  • HUNTING

If you’re looking for a change from two-legged prey, and don’t mind the occasional dreadlocked vegan throwing paint all over you, Blaine County has some of the best hunting on the West Coast, especially in and around Raton Canyon and Paleto Forest.

  • BOATING & DEEP SEA EXPLORATION

Los Santos and Blaine County are known for their watersports, some of which don’t even happen at sea. Yachts, speed boats, seasharks… the options for ravaging the delicate coastal ecosystem in the pursuit of mindless pleasure are endless. If you want to see how much damage you’ve really done, take out a dinghy and go scuba diving. You never know what you could find on the seabed. Just watch out for sharks! Keep your ear to the ground and you might even get your hands on a submarine.

  • INTERNET

Catch up on your social networking, treat yourself to a new vehicle, trade some shares, join a cult. The Internet isn’t just for hooking up with strangers or looking at photos of cats any more. The Internet can be accessed through any laptop or smart phone. Press to access the character’s smart phone, then select the Internet icon on the home screen. Use the left analog stick to navigate around the page and press to select a button. Press to exit the Internet.

  • RADIO

From rock stations to country stations to pop stations to punk stations to dance stations to reggae stations to hip-hop stations – all battling for survival on a dying medium – you’ll never be without the perfect soundtrack to a high-speed chase on the Del Perro freeway.

  • TV

With classic and future classics like Moorehead Rides Again, Impotent Rage, Republican Space Rangers, Kung Fu Rainbow Lazer Force and great reality shows Fame or Shame or the Underbelly of Paradise, who says TV is just dumbed-down repetitive drivel these days? For the man on the go, some shows can even be watched online.

  • CINEMA

If everyone in Los Santos would stop trying to write screenplays and get auditions for a minute, and actually pay to go to the cinema instead of stealing movies online, maybe the film industry wouldn’t be on the brink of extinction. Catch a morning, matinee or evening showing at the historic Doppler Cinema on Vinewood Boulevard, Tivoli Cinema in Morningwood or Ten Cent Cinema in Textile City. Do it for Vinewood.

  • STRIP CLUB

Strip clubs are where men with mommy issues meet girls with daddy issues. Nothing is more self-affirming than a dry-hump from a stranger who understands just how special you really are. Unload your stress at the Vanilla Unicorn tonight.

  • COMMERCIAL REAL ESTATE

With America’s real estate market in the toilet, there’s never been a better time to invest in property. Each of the many businesses that are up for sale throughout Los Santos and Blaine County will generate a weekly profit, to be paid into the owner’s bank account every seven days. Available commercial property is marked on the map and can be purchased on site by simply approaching the For Sale sign outside. The owner may occasionally be contacted by the management for assistance in the running of the business. Failure to help may result in reduced weekly profits from that business.

Note that property is specific to each player character – only the owner of a property will be able to access its facilities.

  • POLICE STATIONS

The LSPD don’t mess around. There are no three strikes in Los Santos; one strike and you’re on your way to either jail or the morgue. If you are arrested, you’ll have your ammunition and body armor confiscated, be taken to the nearest police station, and will have to post bail on release.

  • HOSPITALS

Los Santos is a dangerous place and hospitals are expensive. President Lawton’s healthcare policy is “pay or die” so try to stay out of trouble or the medical bills will soon pile up.

  • PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION

Los Santos isn’t famed for its public transportation but, since all the locals refuse to use the Arrow subway system, at least it’s quiet! If all else fails, jump in a cab or use your initiative to commandeer a vehicle by other means.

  • CAR WASH

It’s no fun cleaning blood off a fender. Wash away the evidence at a drive-thru Car Wash.

  • In Los Santos, money doesn’t just talk, it never shuts up. In these confusing financial times, and with so many things to spend your hard-earned money on – ranging in price from a few dollars to tens of millions – you have to be creative to get what you want. Whether it’s helping out a stranger in need, playing the stock markets or taking over local businesses, there are lots of ways for Michael, Franklin and Trevor to supplement their illicit income with some borderline legitimate cash.

  • STOCK TRADING

You can monitor the stock markets online at bawsaq.com and lcn-exchange.com on the in-game Internet, or get involved yourself and gamble your retirement away. It’s a fast way to lose everything, but also to get rich fast, especially once you get to grips with the factors that drive share prices up and down. Show brand loyalty to the companies in your portfolio, and you’ll help them to outperform. Or do it like the professionals and try your hand at a little insider trading and corporate espionage.

  • ROBBERIES

You can always make some quick cash by robbing a store or an armored security van.

To rob a store, approach the counter, pull a gun and aim it at the store clerk. The gun must be kept trained on the store clerk to complete the robbery – once the clerk has emptied the cash register, he will hand the cash over. The store clerk can be encouraged to move quicker if a few rounds are fired nearby, but a dead clerk cannot hand over anything (although you could just help yourself).

You’ll often see armored security vans driving around the streets of Los Santos, transporting large amounts of money. There are two ways to rob a security van, either by shooting out the lock on the back door until it opens or by blowing the back doors off entirely using plastic explosives. Vans can either be robbed on the street or hijacked and driven to a remote location to be opened. Either way, a heavy police response should be expected.

  • HEISTS

Michael, Franklin and Trevor work together to pull off a series of daring and exciting Heists in Grand Theft Auto V and, in most cases, they will need to select a skilled crew to help them. Often a number of different crew members are available for the job, each with different abilities and a different percentage cut of the proceeds. Choose carefully depending on the particulars of each heist; always selecting the best people will leave less money to share out between Michael, Franklin and Trevor. Skimping too much on hiring costs may mean that the heist doesn’t go as smoothly and the overall take is less.

    - Deathmatch: Trigger and tailor Normal and Team Deathmatches either on foot or in vehicles. Choose your preferred settings including number of teams, victory conditions, time of day, and weather.
