State of Decay is an open sandbox world that develops in real time, dynamically responding to your actions, the choices you make, and the ever-increasing zombie threat. Decide where you'd like to set up a fortified safe haven for you and other survivors you've rescued, then scout for critical supplies and call runners to gather resources and create supply chains. Use the materials you've gathered to build and upgrade your home base, but be careful! Resources will deplete as you pillage areas, and zombies are attracted to noise and activity. Take up the offensive by assaulting hordes before they reach your home, or focus on improving your defenses against the massed zombie attacks. Every choice and every action matter in this fully simulated, evolving world.
Manage your Home via your Journal. Here you can see the status of all your community members, including their Vitality, Stamina, inventory, skills, current condition, and interesting character traits. Earning the friendship of other survivors unlocks the ability to play as them. Help ensure your long-term survival by scavenging supplies, rescuing more survivors to join your community, and building facilities that enable you to create your own resources. Every base has a unique combination of built-in facilities as well as space to build your own. Feeling cramped? Need room to grow? Seek out new locations that offer the protection and space your community needs to expand. Keep an eye on your stockpiles as the strength of your supplies directly impacts your community's morale. Low morale paves the way to negative consequences.
Navigate the World: Press to interact with a range of environmental objects, from climbing fences, hurdling barriers, to crashing through windows. Stealth: Hold to crouch and enter stealth mode. Use to move while crouched. Tap again to exit crouch. Crouching while in bushes provides additional stealth. Sneak up on wandering zombies to deliver an instantaneous killing blow with + . Discovery: Use to interact with objects in the world such as opening doors, searching containers, and barricading windows. Express Yourself: Experiment with the effects of the different emotes your character can display. Hold then press , , , or .
Practice makes perfect. Every character in the world has a unique set of skills and traits, some of which can impact combat effectiveness. Improve skills through use, then choose which specializations to unlock. Are you a stealth expert, able to sneak into any building? Or are you a one-shot zombie killing machine? Contextual Moves: Press + for interactive moves such as pushing a zombie away or shoving it against a wall. Finishers: When an enemy is in a prone position, press + to perform a finishing move.
Like all valuable resources in the world, cars are in limited supply. You'll want to get them home and fixed up in your workshop to keep them in top working order. If a vehicle gets damaged beyond repair, it's gone forever. And don't forget, vehicles are noisy!
Keep an eye on your map and your ears tuned to the radio for new mission opportunities. Mission types range in variety, from scavenging runs to helping your neighbors fight off a zombie attack. Decide which missions to take based on your community's needs. Some mission opportunities are time sensitive, so choose your priorities carefully. Survival is exhausting work and, unlike zombies, people need to rest. When your Vitality and Stamina are running low, head back to your home base to rest up. Maybe take another community member out for a stroll.
Cash is no longer a factor in the post-apocalyptic zombie world. The new currency is supplies and deeds that earn you Influence. Influence plays a large role in getting what you want, whether it be ammo from your own community's supply locker or borrowing some meds from your neighbors. Earning Influence is pretty straightforward: Get Shit Done.
