There are a few ways you can get a match going.

PLAY UNO is a local mode of play that allows you to play matches against the computer using a variety of House Rules and settings. If you choose 2v2, you can play alongside another human player by connecting a second controller to your console.

ONLINE MULTIPLAYER allows you to match up against friends and/or other online players. Using any online features requires an Xbox Live account.
In both local and online modes, you can choose to play either CLASSIC or 2V2 matches.

CLASSIC matches use the original rules of play you know and love, so it's every person for themselves. The first player to discard their hand wins the round, and earns points from other players based on their hand cards.

In 2V2 matches, you're teamed up with a partner and you'll be able to see each other's cards. Winning a round requires only one person on a team emptying their hand, so you'll need good communication and a little bit of planning.

Both Classic and 2v2 can be modified by the same set of House Rules and settings.

Playing in Online Multiplayer matches earns you XP, which goes towards increasing your player LEVEL. Your level is an indication of how dedicated you are to the game, as the more you win and perform special actions in a match, the faster you'll level up.

Performing actions and participating in Online Multiplayer can also satisfy Missions that, in addition to providing you with bonus XP, also allows you to unlock MEDALS that can be displayed in-game to show off your skill in the game.

Medals are also displayed on your PLAYER CARD, which tracks stats from your entire career in the game, such as your total wins and successful Wild Draw Four bluffs.

If you'd like to see how you compare to the rest of the community, you can always hop onto the LEADERBOARDS, which tracks game stats of all online players. The Leaderboards are divided into two filters: GLOBAL and WEEKLY. Global Leaderboards are a lifetime aggregate of stats, while Weekly Leaderboards refresh every week.
There are a few ways you can start playing an online match.

If you just want to start playing as quickly as possible, you can always choose JOIN MATCH. This option won't give you control over which House Rules and Themes are used, but you'll join the next available lobby or early ongoing match.

You can choose the CREATE MATCH option if you'd like to host a match and set all of the rules as well as the Theme. While setting up a match, you can invite friends to the lobby, open up the lobby to the public, or do both in that order. If you're having trouble finding people to join your lobby, try exiting and choosing JOIN MATCH for the time being.

When you play an online match, you can communicate with other players using either Voice Chat or Video Chat. Voice Chat requires that you have a working microphone, while Video Chat is supported using the camera on your KINECT(R). If using Video Chat, ensure that your network is stable and that the camera is situated close enough to you. Unstable network connection may result in choppy or distorted video feed.
Before you start a match, you can also choose which THEME you want to use. In addition to bringing a visual update to your match, each theme other than Classic introduces four brand-new THEME CARDS that introduce never-before-seen effects to the game. In the THEME PICKER, you can choose which cards you'd like to enable or disable for a match.
House Rules allow you to switch things up and ensure no two matches play out the same. You can change the rules in the Match Setup menu preceding each match. In Online Multiplayer, you can only modify the rules if you choose CREATE MATCH.

STACKING: When a Draw Two or Wild Draw Four is played, you may play the same type of card to add to the penalty and pass it down to the next player

7-0: Playing a 7 allows you swap hands with another player, and playing a 0 passes n in the order of play

JUMP-IN: Whenever a card is played, if you hold an identical card, you may play that card out of turn.

There are additional rules that change how certain rules or cards work. Try them all out!
